태백출신 박병문 사진가가 6일부터 17일까지 미국 뉴욕의 갈라 아트 갤러리에서 초대전을 갖는다. ‘여성광부(A Female Miner)’를 주제로 열리는 이번 전시에서 박작가는 ‘지상의 막장’이라고 불리는 선탄부(選炭夫)에서 일하는 여성을 담은 작품 30여점을 선보인다. 박작가는 평생 광부의 삶을 산 아버지의 발자취를 따라 막장과 탄광촌 촬영을 시작했다고 한다. 검은 땀으로 범벅이 된 지하 막장에서 부터 시작해 거대한 선탄장에 이르기까지 그의 기록은 아버지의 흔적을 찾는 여정이었다.
이번 미국 뉴욕에서의 초대전 주제는 박작가가 그동안 선보인 7개의 시리즈 가운데 네번째 주제인 ‘선탄부’, 그 중에서도 석탄을 고르는 여성들이다. 남성 광부들이 지하에서 캐내 올려 보낸 석탄을 선별하는 작업으로 탄광에서는 조연에 가까운 모습이지만 그들도 여전히 무거운 가장의 무게를 짊어지고 매일 새벽 집을 나선다.
초대전에는 그러한 여성 광부들의 모습이 생생하게 담겨있다. 컨베이어 벨트를 지나치는 석탄들에 시선을 고정한 채 작업하고 있는 장면부터 머리에 짐을 한가득 이고 선로를 따라 퇴근하는 모습 그리고 잠시 휴식을 취하는 모습에 이르기까지 고단한 삶이 흑백사진 속에 아로새겨져 있다.
박작가는 작가노트에서 “여성으로서 가장으로서 그 투박한 삶의 중심에 있었던 검은 현장”이라며 “석탄합리화 이후 탄광의 뒤에서 묵묵히 역사로 사라지고 있는 선탄부의 기록현장” 이라고 적고 있다. 초대전은 오는 17일까지 이어지며, 전시회 개막식은 10일 오후 5시(현지시간)에 열린다.

Taebaek-born photographer Park Byung-moon is holding a solo exhibition from the 6th to the 17th at the Gala Art Gallery in New York, USA. The exhibition, themed "A Female Miner," showcases over 30 works capturing women working in a coal screening plant, known as the "surface hell." Park started photographing coal mines and mining villages, following in the footsteps of his father, who spent his life as a miner. His documentation ranges from the blackened sweat of underground pits to the vast screening facilities, tracing his father's legacy.
The theme of this exhibition in New York is the fourth in a series of seven themes Park has showcased, focusing on the "Coal Screening Workers," particularly women sorting coal. These women, while playing a supporting role in the mines, bear the heavy burden of being the breadwinners, leaving home every dawn.
The exhibition vividly captures the female miners: from scenes of them working intently as coal passes on conveyor belts, to images of them carrying heavy loads on their heads while walking along the tracks after work, and even moments of brief rest. These arduous lives are etched into the black and white photographs.
In his artist's note, Park writes about the "black field that stood at the heart of a rough life as a woman and a breadwinner," and describes the exhibition as "a record of the coal screening plant workers, quietly vanishing into history behind the coal mines post-coal rationalization." The exhibition continues until the 17th, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 5 PM local time on the 10th.
